Telling the story of saffron (Crocus sativus L.) and its territory

The UNESCO Chair “Plants for Health in the Mediterranean Tradition” took part in the Second Study Day on L’Aquila Saffron DOP, held in Navelli and promoted by the Consortium for the Protection of L’Aquila Saffron DOP.

During the event, which focused on the relationship between the product, its territory, and scientific research, Prof. Tiziana Esposito and Prof. Teresa Mencherini presented the talk “When waste becomes a resource: saffron flowers for health and well-being.”

Their contribution recalled that saffron was already renowned for its virtues at the time of the Salernitan Medical School, and highlighted the most recent scientific evidence on the bioactive compounds of saffron flowers, emphasizing their value in terms of sustainability and innovation.

Moderated by Massimiliano D’Innocenzo, President of the Consortium for the Protection of L’Aquila Saffron DOP, the event represented an important opportunity for dialogue between tradition, research, and territorial enhancement, underlining the fruitful collaboration between institutions and the academic world.
