On December 11st 2021, the book “Il Metodo Cilento” (The Cilento Way of Life) by Luciano Pignataro, reporter and famous gastronome, was presented at Mangrella Auditorium in the Monumental Complex “San Francesco”, located in the historic center of Eboli which also houses the National Archeological Museum of Eboli. Rita Patrizia Aquino, chair holder of the UNESCO Chair “Plants for Health in the Mediterranean Traditions”, Daniela Palma, headmaster of high School IIS “Enzo Ferrari”, Maurizio Somma owner of the restaurant “Il Papavero” matched their skills on the theme. Carmine Papace e Alfonso Esposito, leader of producer organizations Terramare and TerraOrti, contributed to the discussion as champions of organic farming in Cilento. The book presentation was focused on the Cilento Region, area known for its UNESCO archeological sites (Archeological Park of Paestum and Certosa of Padula), MABs-Man and the Biosphere Programme (Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park), and the world famous Mediterranean Diet, UNESCO intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Cilento has a great number of healthy elderly (80s-90s) and even centenarians due to its healthy life style where the impact of industrialization, chronic and epidemic diseases is very low. The diet of the people based on vegetables and fruits and culinary procedures, the active lifestyle, wisdom, slowness seem to be the secret to longevity for this healthy elderly population. Its is very important to preserve and promote “Il Metodo Cilento” for avoiding the biodiversity and lifestyle loss in this area which demonstrates that living in harmony with nature is possible and beneficial.
